ust like every expert of every field of knowledge has some precise skills, leaders need to have some specific competencies as well. In 2001 the renowned author Anne Bruce wrote the book Leaders : Start to Finish, where among other things identifies ten competencies where leaders should focus their efforts on, I’ve picked up nine of the ten compentencies:
Integrity
According to Wikipedia, Integrity is “consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcome”.
The key to the concept is consistency of actions and values.
Trust and Values
A leader exhibits trust when the leader respect others, does as he/she says, communicates in an open way, and most important of all acknowledges that trust is a two way road, a mutual exchange.
The Values are the essence in the behavior of the leader, that’s why is so important that the company’s values are in sync with the one the leader has.
Team Building
A good leader, knows that building a team is essential to achieve the goals he’s ment to. He/she also knows the importance that being part of team has to every member in the organization, that’s why the leader fosters team building.
Listening
If you can’t listen, you can’t lead. As easy as that, being able to hear people is not only an skill is one of the first skills a leader should develop.
Influencing and Persuading
Using the right words, doing the right things, setting the proper examples. Influencing and persuading are necessary to make your team move towards your goals. Once again, is the leader’s behavior the one that persuades the most.
Competitive Spirit
Being the best at what you do, is one of the motivations of every leader. Without that kind of motivation, that sense of achievement, is difficult to reach higher developments on the endeavours you set for yourself. Every leader, has great expectations and a desire to be the best.
Priority Setting and Decision Making
A good leader knows what has to be done, and the importance of the things to be accomplished. So the leader has clear priorities, that helps him/her to take the proper decision under difficult circumstances. When in doubt, or in front of difficult times, clear priorites are the ones that help the most.
A Sense of Humor
Life is not a series of unrelated events, all the contrary, everything that happens in our lifes have certain relationship, if you don’t take your life with a sense of humor, it would be hard to confront difficult times and will be even harder to inspire trust in the people you work with, if you can’t take setbacks with the sense of humor that reveals trust and confidence in your means and the means of your team.
Vision and adaptability
If you think about leadership, you should think VISION. Yes, VISION. There’s no leadership if there’s no vision. You lead to somewhere, towards a goal, a target, an objective, your going after the big prize, and the people you lead is behind you toward that goal. On the other hand, you have to be flexible enough to accept that sometimes the road to the goal is sometimes longer than expected, you have to adapt yourself to that. In that sense a leader is called not only to initiate changes but to accept them too.
1. Pick only one, and work on it a whole day.
2. Do it, you’ll improve.
3. Repeat, until you’ve worked on the 9 competencies.
4. Keep doing steps 1 through 3 until it becomes “second nature” for you.
Remember, Be Alert, Be A Leader
