yes, i appreciate the social route to team building, however the need for team building needs to be well diagnosed and the list of the participants beginning top down putting hidden role models and facilitators into the team to learn from, culminating into a project assignment for the team to apply their behavioural skills and lessons to take home learning from live experience and case studies both internal and external - not rushing the excercise and devoting all the time it needs, the CEO present there signifying the significance of the event and demonstrating his own facilatation skills while motivating the learning team.
this team needs to meet once a month or two for atleast 6 months to reinforce their learning under the expert guide to hone the competencies rather than make this excercise academically cherishing leaving members helpless back at the work place scenario - the bosses of these members need to remain present at times to share their view of their new experiences with the trained members as also take an input or two to hone their own facilitation skills and thus generate an overall learning/doing climate for strategic organisational culture and results. hope this adds some meaning here!

I think any team building event or activity has to consider the company, it's goals and it's staff... i.e. one-size does not fit all and packages should be tailored after consultation to increase the chances of a successful and meaningful event.
