A great leader knows how to motivate his/her team and most important himself/herself. A true leader knows well how to motivate and inspire people to perform at outstanding levels. As a motivational speaker and renowned author Brian Tracy knows how to do this and gives us 4 simple clues on how to do it.
1. Keep people informed.
It’s essential to keep people aware of everything that happens and effects their jobs. Tracy states that “people want and need to feel that they are ‘insiders,’ that they are aware of everything that is going on.”. If you take a second, you’ll see that’s really demoralising to be out of the loop, and of course when you’re demoralised your performance it’s far from excellent.
2. Give Regular Feedback
According to Tracy, Ken Blanchard says that, “Positive feedback is the breakfast of champions.” That’s the key, regular positive feedback is essential to improve the work of your team. Be aware, that positive feedback it’s not about praises but about objective and concrete information that helps to improve the performance of the team, we’re not talking criticisms.
3. Be Generous With Praise
Don’t be afraid to recognize a good job, or a great effort. Leadership it’s about learning to see the best in the others and empower that potential to the fullfilment of the team’s goals. Tracy states that ”
“…people are the only asset that can be made to appreciate in value by giving them warmth, respect, approval and by creating a climate of positive expectations.”
4. Create An Exciting Future
Almost every book about leadership that exists talks about vision, that is the “exciting future”. Your job as a leader is to shape a vision compelling enough to move your team towards it. What’s so powerful about a vision it’s that, when it’s crystal clear, it helps you to sort out the obstacles in the way to fulfulling it. Kouzes & Posner, suggest to inspired a “shared vision”, that is take into account your team’s needs and wants also.
Tracy suggests Two actions to put these clues in motion…
1. Keep your team informed, hold regular meetings and make them feel “inside”, better yet, make them “inside”.
2. Don’t be afraid to praise. Take the next chance you have to praise your team or and individual for a specific topic. Don’t lose the opportunity to make people feel better about themselves and their work.
