Achievement and Leadership

Leadership and Achievement are completely tied up. In the road to reach bigger goals a leader has to achieve smaller ones first. That’s why achievement for leadership has two dimensions:

  1. Helps to Increase or decrease the credibility of the leader.
  2. It’s helps us to set and reaching the milestones that will lead us to our ultimate destination, our vision.

In the first point, the leader’s credibility is affected by his capacity to reach goals. Thus, leadership is affected if the milestone is reached or not. The ability to achieve, to set reachable milestones in the project is essential to foster collaboration. People are led by results and by example. It’s no wonder then that credibility is affected by results.

In the second point, the ability to set attainable milestones or intermediary goals is greatly desirable. With such skill, you could create meaningful challenges for your team and keep a high morale. Those challenges are typically the result of joining the people in solving problems with the leader. After several milestones the team has built its commitment to a course of action.  Set an out of reach milestone, and your team demoralizes. On the other hand, set a too easy too reach milestone and the team starts to procastinate and loses motivation.

Don’t confuse yourself thinking that no mistakes are expected, or no fail is allowed. The purpose of setting several milestones is to test the team’s abilities and leader’s response to drawbacks and reworks. Failed attempts are also an opportunity to learn, and learning as we’ve seen is part of leadership too.

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

Ok, so you got the point Didn’t you? Let’s move.

1. If you’re in project right now. What have I learned so far? Can I use this experience to improve my team’s work? What have I achieved? Do we all understand the same? Share and discuss.

2. Make a list with all the milestones you’ve set up in your current project. And look for possible out of reach ones. Look if you can split those milestones in two or even three smaller ones. Also look for possible too easy to reach milestones and add some extra challenges to those ones.

Be alert. Be A Leader!!!
