Leadership Credibility, Don’t Compromise It

These days a rumour can spread way beyond your sight, your county, your state, and your country. Internet has brought in “Total World Exposure”. What does it mean? It means you can get caught by the rumour, but worst of all, you can be an amplifyng source of the rumour itself. That’s exactly what happened to MSNBC. I just read the news that MSNBC had to retract for the false information about “Palin not knowing Africa was a continent and not a country”. The thing is that the source that was cited as the originator of the comment, turned out to be a phony.

How many times we don’t check the source of an information? Most of the time, we just replicate comments and don’t even take some seconds (not even minutes) to reflect upon the information we’ve just got.

Credibility is the most important asset for leadership. If you don’t have a strong credibility then you can’t lead. One of the best ways to lose your hard won credibility is to start repeating everything you hear on the hall, or from unverified sources. If you can’t filter out what’s verified from what is not, then you have a problem. You’re not meant to lead.

You have to understand that you compromise your credibility every time you’re citing or talking about something you’re not sure about. My advice, don’t even repeat something you’re not sure about. If you’re not 100% sure of the information you’re giving, and you’re required to give it anyway, then at least you should state that you’re not sure of what you’re saying in CAPITAL LETTERS.

BACK TO MSNBC

I’m not sure about the credibility of MSNBC but I think is high enough, to let the incident pass by. Although I think their credibility is not really compromised, the incident remind us that we’re all exposed to rumors and we have to be careful. The right thing to do if that happens is to recognize the mistake and move on.

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

1. Every time you receive new information, reflect for a few seconds before even trying to reply to who’s informing you.

2. If you want to spread the word about it, Could you please reflect just a minute before doing so?

Be Alert, Be A Leader. :)
