Leaders are reality facers, they don’t go around hiding themselves from what’s going on.
If you know something about Jack Welch, then you know that one of the things that characterises him is Facing Reality. And this is really a skill, you have to learn it, and then strive for it to become second nature.
The 3 step process to face reality is this:
1. Face Reality.
You have to see things the way they are, not the way you want or think they are. You have to base your decisions in hard facts, not hunches or perceptions. When you measure and face reality, you take the first step to improvement.
2. Act on Reality Quickly.
Once you’ve realized what the situation is, you can start changing that situation for the better. You have to move, you have make things happen, and you have to make it quickly. Do what you can, with what you have right now. Don’t wait for the “perfect” conditions to be present. It’s up to you to change the situation, you’re the leader, you have to work on it, it’s up to you to motivate your team, and move your resources.
3. Turn Your Business Around.
If you don’t face reality it’s like sticking your face in the sand, or blocking your eyes with your hands. Do the opposite, face reality, and you can turn a “bad situation” into an opportunity and Turn your business around. It requires courage to face reality, but the rewards are always worth the effort.
LEADERSHIP ACTIONS
1. Think of your current situation, and what the hard numbers have to say about it.
