Leadership Skill – Learning

The one skill leaders should excel in today’s world is learning. In today’s fast paced world, leaders who are constant learners are the one’s who will become remarkable.

According to Kevin Eikenberry in his book Remarkable Leadership, learning is the underlying skill that can make leaders remarkable. In the book he presents the cycle of learning. The cycle of learning has four steps.

1. Have an Experience.

The experience is the “start” of the learning process. For instance, you read about a new technique, you hear a comment, you see something that interests you. Anything you experience is the input for the learning process.

2. Reflect on that Experience.

Now comes the real work, once you have experienced something you have to THINK about it. You have to become aware of what you did. That is, you have to start thinking in terms of actions and results. You should also be aware of the emotions involved in the process, that is, you have to take into account How did you feel through the experience? How those feelings relate to the outcomes of the proccess?

3. Generalize from the Experience.

Generalizing has to do with answering the following questions: What did you learn? How can you apply what you’ve learnt? How can you use it? What can you do next? If you’re able to answer this questions you’ll have a procedure, a set of steps to perform.

4. Take action.

Now is the time to use what you’ve learnt, it doesn’t make sense for you to go through steps 1 to 3 and no using what you’ve learnt, and instead of that, doing the things the same old fashioned way. Or even worse, not acting at all.

After step 4 has been completed, your “knowledge” level has increased. That means, you have improved on that particular subject and can apply the learning cycle again, and again to improve even more.  You should strive to make this process (cycle) second nature to you.

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

1. Apply the four step Cycle of Learning to every possible experience you have.

2. Don’t stop on step 2 or 3, go on until you finish with step 4. After that, begin again.
