In the post What People Look For In Leaders I talked about the characteristics people was looking for in leaders. The qualities were taken from the book, The Leadership Challenge, 4th Edition. One of the top 4 qualities people admired the most about their leaders was that they were COMPETENT.
Competent according to Merriam Webster has four different meanings:
In the book Outliers: The Story of Success Malcolm Gladwell supports his thesis on the idea that to become an expert one has to spend 10,000 hours in doing, learning, practicing the activity. For most of the activities we do perform we don’t really need to be experts, but we do need to be competent if we want to lead. To me that is: know what to do and when, and when the time comes, do it.
If you’ve read the latests post in the site, you’ll see I’m repeating once and again that you have to lead. If you’re not exposed to lead, then how are you going to do it? Expose yourself to situations where you have to lead. Strive to become really good at what you do, and better yet on what you want to become a leader. That is, Do you want a lead a handful of programmers? be the best programmer, set that as a goal, you might not reach it, but you’ll improve, and if not the best, you’ll become competent.
Think about it: Who would you follow the experienced and most respected guy or someone else?
Be COMPETENT, be the guy everybody is confident to ask for advice in your activity because YOU KNOW your job well.
Remember, leadership starts within you, you have to lead yourself before leading others. So Lead yourself to be COMPETENT.
1. Choose the area where you want to lead.
2. Pick the worse of your skills in that area.
3. Get better in that skill until you become competent at it.
4. Evaluate yourself again and go to #2 until you are competent in
every skill in the area you want to lead.
Remember, Be Alert, Be A Leader
