Leaders Know and Communicate

You Are a Leader. Leaders are conscious about their position in the organization they work for. But most important, they now exactly where their organizations are heading to. What I’m saying is that they work with a purpose, they know they’re building a cathedral and not just moving rocks.

What if you’re the guy that moves the rocks in a construction. Well, if you want to lead, you’re called to help others to see that their work is as important as anyone’s. That’s what leaders do, they help people to understand why they do what they do.

There is a story I remember about John F. Kennedy and the big challenge to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. One day, Kennedy was taking a tour of NASA, at some point during the tour he met a cleaning woman. Kennedy asked her, “What is your job here?” The woman responded, “I’m helping to put a man on the moon.”

A week ago I did a presentation to a group of project managers about a new system we’re implementing at my company. I took the opportunity to set the tone of the presentation showing them the “service offer” of our company. That really helped out to put things in perspective, there’s a lot of effort to put on deploying the system, but since the PM remembered why we’re doing it, now we all feel part of something bigger than us, just like the NASA woman.

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

1. First of all, figure out, what are you part of. Are you helping to send a man to the moon?
2. Second, don’t loose any chance to communicate it to anybody in your organization. Believe it or not, most of our colleagues are not aware of the “real” job we’re doing.

Remember Be Alert, Be A Leader :)
