Simple Leadership Model

by Ken Valenzuela, BeALeader.Net's Chief Editor

In the last four tips of the section “3 minute leadership” I’ve talked about  vision, credibility, communication,  and achievement.  Well, those four elements are the components of my version of a Leadership Model. As you can see, Leadership is built upon those four components.  I know the model might seem  elemental, but I think it’s quite poweful, and simple enough to remind yourself every day what to focus on in the road to becoming a better leader. Just four components

1. You have to build credibility in order to become a leader, nobody will follow you if they don’t trust you.

2. You need a vision.  If there’s no vision how can you lead? lead where?

3. Ok, people believes in you and you have a destination. But, have you told them where you want to go? Do they know what you expect from them? How can you get the most of your team if they don’t know where they’re headed to?

4. Achievement is the ultimate goal. It’s ok to have the other 3 components, but reaching your vision, achieving your goals is the last step to have a succesful leadership.

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

First, reflect upon this model and try to fit it in your own world, your reality. Do you think it needs more components? which ones? why?

Second, Have you done the perception exercise yet? Don’t you? Then do it–> HERE <–

Third, remember leadership is for everyone, even for you or me.

I like communication component as a big wall in the model. Having a good credibility base, is the principal way to grow up as a leader.

  2. Vision & communication is like a life-blood for any organization , If this chokes the whole system collapses ,
It equally important to know where you are heading , How close or far from goals and destinations that ones team has set for achievement .

Ken, though your four leadership components my appear elementary we know that it is simple elements that interact to generate complex results. The additional factor that lubricates these four components to generate sound leadership by my thinking is KNOWLEDGE.It helps to acknowledge the authenticity of the vision, enhances communication, identifies achievements, as well as instructs on the value of credibility.

I’m experienced right now the effect of communication failure on leading process.
The leader of the organization I’m working write now, has braked obviously the communication inside of the team, so the work is going worse or slowely as before.
He tries to strength his leadership role and view against the team, but is doing it with the wrong way.
    This situation push me to open another topic;
    Development Project Leadership!
It’s happened often that development project are active in poor countries. It’s happen as well often that Leadership in such countries is almost a king inside organization, so the question that follows is; “how applicable are the Leadership Theories in such cases”?
